Very true, magic does always win vs. anything (except stronger magic). But as far as guns go, the AK is a familiarly reconized gun, as compared to a random magic staff. The only reason why many peoples know about the MP44 is because COD had it in their WW2 game as the STG 44, in full-auto only (as compared to togglable semi/full auto). Gun was also used to make the A280 (I think that's what it's called) in the SW films.
