I've never got this game. You only build things in there or what? Once some fuckers destroyed my masterpiece and I quit

Basis is building things. You can also yews this to make pixel art (what's been posted here), architectural stuff. Also using redstone (kinda like electricity) circuits, can build various mechanizations (like I made a working castle gate that toggles via buttons).

Some servers have made mini-games that people play on, too.

As for other people breaking, some servers have server-side mods that allow players to protect their blocks and/or areas of land to prevent other players from building/breaking on it (or only certain players). On small servers, generally since everyone knows each other, there's a mutual agreement not to mess with each other's stuff if said mods aren't used.

Not to mention there is the survival aspect of minecraft - working to gather materials to build your creations while trying to not starve/get killed.

And the co-op aspect where you want to work on a huge project and grab your buddies and go adventuring together to find the perfect mountainous location for your giant castle, or the perfect ocean for your sprawling harbor city. Some of my favorite Minecraft memories are traveling through like 45 minutes of ocean on a boat with a buddy from high school, just shooting the shit on skype while we traveled. (Another favorite memory was finding the island we wanted to build on - and trying to route animals onto it from 500 blocks away over a single-block-wide bridge so we could have our own animal population)
