Knowing tactics makes you good, having skill makes you great, having both makes you elite.
Implication is that you can be skilled at a game while knowing jack shit about the tactics behind it, or conversely, knowing the tactics behind a game while having no skill whatsoever.
I learned mine placements forever ago, but I adopted the Duo mine-placement of random mines everywhere (at least on hoth) maybe a year or two ago - to constantly alter the way mines are set up and make it impossible for the offense to yews per-determined paths to get around mines. I actually find it to be very effective.
I still yews the ones I learned years ago. There are enough different placements to keep surprising the enemy, I find. My old favourite on codes, hoth, worked brilliantly against the invis guys yesterday.

Raw skill can only get you so far. If you dont know game mechanics or tactics you're useless and a detriment to your team.
