Well, the way the saber works is that the longer it is contact with the target during the swing, the more damage it does. by using yaw, the saber is in the taget nearly continuously, leading to much higher damage. Another, more effective, but harder way is 'the poke', moving your mouse so the saber is basically stuck in the target (poking or stabbing it essentially). This does even more damage, but like I said, requires more skill than hitting a button. Yaw also increases the effectiveness of katas by a bunch.
As far as you being a noob and us vets, I've been playing siege for....4 years? I still play a touch better than a noob. I have the experience/knowledge of a vet, but completely lack the ability to yews most of it effectively
