Mic Doesn't Work on Vista

I got a friend who switched to Vista but now his mic doesn't work. Worked fine on XP but now it doesn't work at all.
Anyone have this problem? And if so what did you do to fix it.

what kind of sound card is he using? often times, sound drivers for vista can be scantily distributed.
