BlackMesa

Post by Magyk »

I've been following this from a distance for a while. Big projects like this usually never get finished, so I didn't want to get my hopes up.. But someone has recreated the original Half Life using the source engine - it just got released on Friday.

I played the first 20 minutes or so, and I have to say it made me just as giddy as the first time I watched my brother play it when I was like 8 or 9. Truly amazing work for a fan-made thing, and amazingly faithful to HL. It's totally free, so I suggest checking it out.

(Edit: I'm also excited, because beating this will give me an excuse to replay HL2, which is also an amazing game.)

I saw this a while back. They didn't finish the Xen part yet, which they say is going to be almost its own game (expanded from the original).
I didn't care for HL tbh, granted I played it years after HL2. Still waiting for Episode 3 myself... maybe it'll be the launch title for Source 2.

Idk, I just couldn't get into HL1 or HL2 as much as I tried. Would be cool if they add a coop mode or something in the next release :)

Co-op makes anything better.

IMO one of the most underutilized gametype/mode in gaming. Second only to objective/class based multiplayer gameplay with lightsabers :D

Meh, Co-Op is fun for some games. I like it for most FPS games, minecraft is sort of co-op in a way, but if it's something like Resident Evil than GTFO co-op.

Co-op is 1/5th the reason that Resident Evil 5 & 6 are complete and utter garbage.

I swear HL2 runs like shit on OS 10.7 on my mac. Part of it is my graphics card which creates strange visual glitches (haven't found a setting that fixes it and I've tried everything I know) but then it also crashes randomly too. OS 10.7 broke way too many games. They will still run but they crash all the damn time. I really want to know how Apple managed to make everything so unstable. I'm hesitant to upgrade to OS 10.8 because I'm afraid things will get worse.

HL2 runs on my mac
This is huge. For years the only thing we had was Quake engine games, and eventually some UT. AAA titles were generally ported years after the fact, by Aspyr or others.

If you can afford a Mac, fine; they dual boot Windows now so it's less of a pain to run other things. I built a Hackintosh last year and it did well until the HD died (hardware issue).
